Dinosaur Play

by Kim Wallace

Dinosaurs are stomping through our homes this week! So let's make play time even more exciting by incorporating a dinosaur-themed sensory bin and story time? Here are some tips on how to create a fun and interactive dinosaur sensory bin that your child will love.

Start by gathering some items that will bring the bin to life. You can use plastic dinosaurs, dinosaur footprints, fossils, and small rocks or pebbles that look like dinosaur eggs. Spring is a great time to find Easter eggs that can be used for dinosaur eggs all year round!  You can also add items such as foam letters, foam shapes, and shells of different sizes and colors. Place all of these items into a container or bin, and you’re ready to go.

Invite your child to explore the bin and use their imagination. Depending on their age, you can challenge your child to identify certain items, search for hidden items, or even build a dino-world with the items in the bin. Use brushes to uncover fossils and other hidden secrets.

While your child is exploring, why not add a story to the mix? Reading books about dinosaurs is an excellent way to engage your child’s imagination and encourage them to learn more about these fascinating creatures. You could even make up a story about a dinosaur adventure your child is about to embark on. Your child is absorbing everything going on and this could be the perfect time for them to listen to a story. Sometimes at bedtime my boys can be a little over stimulated and not able to listen to a story.

Creating a dinosaur sensory bin is a great way to make play time exciting and educational for your child. Plus, it’s an easy and fun activity to do together! I love using sensory play to bond with my children.
